Sector Five

While learning Ruby, I researched and purchased a few books. Notable among them is Learn Game Programming with Ruby written by Mark Sobkowicz. This book teaches one to utilize the Gosu Ruby library to create a game from scratch using Ruby.

Sector Five is the second game in the book which allows the player to move a spaceship around the screen by pressing keys. Waves of enemy ships descend from above, and the player needs to shoot them before they get to the bottom of the screen. My version is a blend of code directly from the book, as well as a few of my own customizations and added features.

The completed game can either be downloaded as an executable below or you can view or fork my SectorFive Github repository. The completed game files are in the SectorFive_4 directory.

To play the game, download the file and unzip it. You'll find the executable file in the resultant SectorFive folder. Mac users may need to waive a security block to run the app:

Go to Security & Privacy. Click the Open Anyway button in the General pane to confirm your intent to open or install the app.
